Apple promotes European unit chief in realignment
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer will promote Michael H. Spindler to the position of chief operating officer. Spindler, 46, is the former head of Apple's European operations. Spindler is the first COO since the company reorganized in 1988. Spindler, who is West German, has been with Apple since 1980. He is praised for his strategic management of Apple's European interests. Under Spindler's guidance, sales in Europe more than doubled to $1.2 billion between 1986 and 1988. Analysts believe that Spindler will use some of the approaches that were so successful in Europe on the slower-growing domestic market. One technique is to have dealers who sell only Apple products instead of relying on computer retailers who sell products from diverse manufacturers. In conjunction with Spindler's promotion, Jean-Louis Gassee, president of Apple Products division, will give up worldwide marketing and manufacturing responsibilities.

Apple Computer loses one of its pioneers
Article Abstract:
Delbert W. Yocam resigned from Apple Computer Inc to pursue other business opportunities. Yocam, who has held several key positions in the company, was one of the last executives left from the Steven Jobs/Stephen Wozniak era of Apple. In 1988, Yocam was named head of Apple's Asia Pacific division and its educational activities. Since joining Apple in 1979, Yocam's titles have included director of materials, general manager of the Apple II division, executive vice president in charge of operations and chief operating officer. Yocam said he wanted to get involved with an industry that will "change the world" after he leaves Apple, but remained undecided what that industry would be.
