Odyssey of hacker: from outlaw to consultant
Article Abstract:
John Draper first gained fame in the '70s by discovering that the AT&T phone network could be manipulated by an audio tone generator. He shared this information with others and soon an underground movement of 'phone phreaks' was born, making phone calls free of charge. Mr. Draper served some time after being apprehended by the FBI. He helped program IBM's first mass-market wordprocessing software, EasyWriter. He made a million and lost it. Now living in Fremont, CA, he and some associates have started a computer software security service for corporate data networks.

Big loss and big revamping at Apple
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer is claiming a larger quarterly loss than expected and is announcing major restructuring plans. The company has already begun laying off employees at its Cupertino, CA, headquarters. Apple's joint multimedia software venture with IBM, Kaleida, announced the resignation of President and CEO Nathaniel Goldhaber. The announcement is generating industry speculation that Apple may be altering its strategy and reconsidering its plans with Kaleida and Taligent, a second software venture with IBM. The reorganization and staff reductions are costing $320.9 million, causing the $188.3 million 3rd qtr loss FY 1993. Part of Apple's restructuring is a plan to focus more on software.
