Industry's growing romance with diamonds
Article Abstract:
Manufacturing artificial diamonds has become a simpler process, and the consequence is that diamond coatings may become commonplace in the industrial world, including in the semiconductor industry. When laced with other materials, diamonds can make high-voltage, high-frequency semiconductors that are capable of performing signal processing tasks beyond what the current generation of chips can manage. There is particular excitement about progress in chemical vapor deposition, which works by synthesizing and laying down thin layers of diamond on top of other substances at relatively low temperatures and pressures. It is thought that chemical vapor deposition research could transform the diamond into one of the nation's most important industrial materials.
