Apple set to offer new line
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer Inc will introduce three microcomputers in mid-Oct 1990. Apple has, according to Chairman and CEO John Sculley, changed its business plan from selling a few high-priced microcomputers to selling more machines with lower profit margins. Apple's management did not reveal details, but the company's lowest-priced machine is expected to be the Macintosh Classic, a Motorola 68000-based black-and-white microcomputer. It will cost about $1,000. The Macintosh LC is a color machine based on the Motorola 68020 and expected to cost about $2,500. And the Macintosh IIsi, which is based on the Motorola 68030, is a color machine expected to sell for about $3,800. Apple's new products should be competitive with inexpensive IBM clones equipped with Microsoft Windows 3.0.

Portable and desktop units to be introduced by Apple
Article Abstract:
Apple introduces a portable Macintosh and the Macintosh IIci high-end desktop computer. The portable's innovate screen and long-lasting battery are likely to make it a big seller among Macintosh users, although the machine is relatively heavy and expensive. Prices for the 16-pound portable Macintosh will start at $5,800. The $6,800 Macintosh IIci, which is based on Motorola's 68030 microprocessor and is as much as 75 percent faster than the IIcx, is expected to be the more important of the two new products for Apple in the long run. Apple also announced that it has made an agreement with Microsoft Corp to jointly develop the technology for displaying different styles and sizes of type and transferring the image to paper via a laser printer.

Apple to introduce much faster Macintosh model today
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer Inc will introduce the Macintosh IIfx, the fastest and most powerful system yet fielded by the firm. The IIfx will retail for $11,500, with an 80-megabyte hard drive and a 13-inch color screen, and $8,969 without. The IIfx is twice as fast as Apple's previous top of the line model. Market analysts say the new machine will put Apple in competition with the low-end machines from workstation vendors such as HP and Sun Microsystems. The introduction, while a strong one for Apple, does nothing to curtail the criticism it is receiving for ignoring the bottom end of its product line.
