Dark days for the Inuit: tuberculosis outbreaks revive memories of an earlier epidemic

Tuberculosis, once thought to be nearly eradicated, is making a comeback in certain regions of Canada. The native peoples who reside in the Northwest Territories are especially at risk. In the 1940s and 1950s, these same Inuit peoples endured an epidemic of the disease.

Pride of the Arctic: Susan Aglukark sings about pain and joy among the Inuit

Aglukark, 28, grew up in the Canadian Arctic community of Arviat, and her records are very popular with Inuits and other native peoples who live in the region. In her latest recording 'This Child' she sings about such problems as suicide and child abuse.
