As merger stalls, US Airways sinks
Article Abstract:
US Airways is going into a slow decline a year after announcing its merger with United Airlines. Its shares are down by 48% from its 52-week high of $49 per share, attained on May 24, 2000, the day the merger was announced. CEO Rakesh Gangwal and Chmn Stephen Wolf blame low-fare competitors for US Airways' problems but the airline's critics question its business decisions. They say US Airways has been growing at record pace but its revenue per seat has been declining. The airline also lacks sufficient crews to fly all of the new Airbus jets to be delivered in 2001.
