Web portals undergo makeovers for fall

Sites of America Online, Microsoft and Walt Disney's Go.com are introducing new formats and images in their portals in order to attract the attention of audiences and advertisers. Aside from providing e-mail, searches and shopping, the sites are developing a broad array of tailored entertainment and information. AOL has redeveloped itself to serve television, Microsoft has integrated its portal and Internet browser in MSN Explorer while Go.com will provide a new prominent search engine and greater focus on lifestyle news and hobbies.

Amazon holiday sales near $1B

Amazon.com announced that retail sales for 4th qtr 2000 rose by 40% to $960 million when compared with same quarter in 1999. Bigger sales cause the online retailer's shares to appreciate by 19 cents to close at $15.13 at end of trading on Jan 8, 2001. Amazon said the rise in its holiday revenues can be attributed to several factors. These include a increase of 4 million people to its user base; a 25% hike in average customer orders; and a shift towards higher-priced consumer goods.

U.S. Internet search engines click abroad

US Internet search engines are becoming more popular in the international arena. A Media Metrix study demonstrates that AltaVista ranks first n five of the fastest-growing online international markets, namely, the UK, Australia, France, Germany and Canada whle Infoseek is leading in Japan. AltaVista attributes its foreign dominance to longstanding operations and Babelfish, a language-translation software that is attaining cult-like status.
