Assante snaps up another firm

Assante Capital Management Inc. of Winnipeg, Manitoba, has reached an agreement to acquire 75% interest of Merrill Lynch Canada Inc. in financial services firm Financial Concept Group Ltd. for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition would increase the total assets under management of Assante to just more than C$24 billion, thus strengthening the position of the company as the biggest independent financial advisory company in Canada. Financial Concept, which handles around C$5.6 billion in customer assets, is the owner of Winnipeg-based mutual fund dealer ProFund Distributors Ltd., money manager Alpha Strategic Partners Ltd. of Toronto, Ontario, and Toronto-headquartered mutual fund dealer Financial Concept Corp. and its brokerage unit FCG Securities Corp.

AGF snaps up Global Strategy
Article Abstract:
AGF Management Ltd. has acquired Global Strategy Holdings Inc. in a $438-million deal that will make AGF the seventh-largest mutual fund company in Canada. Under the terms of the AGF's cash-and-stock transaction, it could pay up to an additional $13-million depending on Global Strategy's assets. The deal will close around the end of October 2000. AGF will pay between 67 to 75% in cash or notes and the remainder in AGF class B non-voting shares.
