Embraer CEO tries to clear the air on subsidies

Mauricio Botelho, CEO of Brazil's Embraer SA, claims his country's aerospace subsidies are known to the public, and it is Canada's attempt to hide subsidies that is causing the trade dispute between the two countries. But representatives from jet manufacturing rival Bombardier Inc. in Montreal say Brazil's policies are not that open.

Auto industry posts its first trade deficit since '91 recession

Canada's auto sector is facing trade deficit in July 2006, which is the first time since 1991. The weak United States consumer demand, soaring imports and contracted exports are the main reason for this deficit.

Bombardier-Embraer dogfight heats up

Bombardier Inc and Empresa Brasileira de Aeronautica SA's (Embraer SA) rivalry continues to heat up as both firms trade accusations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. A WTO trade panel is looking into complaints made by both companies concerning unfair subsidizing of production by each side. Bombardier and the Canadian government points to Pro-ex, a Brazilian government financing program that cuts the cost of borrowing money, as the culprit.
