Axcan Pharma to buy rest of U.S. marketing partner

Axcan Pharma Inc is buying the remaining 50% interest in its US marketing partner Axcan Schwarz LLC for $52 million. Axcan Schwarz was formed in Jan 1997 to market a specific formulation of Urso tablets in the US. Urso tablets are used to treat primary biliary cirrhosis, a liver ailment. In August, Axcan acquired Birmingham, AL, drug distributor Scandipharm Inc for $97 million.

No-show U.S. patients hurt TLC

Mississauga, Ont.-based TLC Vision Corp. has reported a sharp drop-off in business as clinic patients cancel appointments due to fears over the SARS outbreak. TLC reports that about 60% of its blood dialysis patients come from the United States.
