BAT to sell Rothman's Canadian arm
Article Abstract:
British America Tobacco PLC (BAT) will sell the Canadian tobacco interests of the Netherlands-based Rothmans International BV if the merger of the two firms is completed. Federal antitrust regulators are expected to oppose the creation of a company that would control almost 90% of the cigarette and fine-cut tobacco market in Canada. Toronto, Canada-based Rothmans Inc, 71.2%-owned by Rothmans, controls a 60% stake in the operating entity, Rothmans Benson & Hedges Inc, while the remaining stake is owned by Philip Morris Companies Inc.

Sleeman uncaps Quebec market with acquisition
Article Abstract:
Sleeman Breweries Ltd. of Guelph, Ontario, has agreed to acquire Brassiere Seigneuriale Inc., a small brewery in Boucherville, Quebec. Although the cash purchase is not large enough to make a significant dent on Sleeman's books, the deal will give Sleeman access to Quebec's beer market and a new line of super-premium beers. Seigneuriale produces four super-premium, Belgium-style beers, which offer margins 50% higher than Sleeman's own ale and lagers. Super-premium brands account for 1% of Quebec's total beer sales.
