BC Rail on track for loss as Asian markets dry up
Article Abstract:
BC Rail Ltd., Canada's government-owned freight railway and the fourth-largest in the country, has reported that it will post a loss of up to C$9 million in 1998, its second unprofitable year in 15 years. The freight company attributed the expected loss to the significant drop in the demand for coal and forest products by the Asian countries, particularly Japan. A continuing decline in the demand for these products, the transport of which is the main source of BC Rail's revenue, will likely carry over additiona losses in 1999.
