BC Telecom-Telus deal 'a big game of leapfrog.'

Telus Corp., headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, is merging with BC Telecom Inc. in a deal that will make a major business in the North America's telecommunication market. The merged firm that will initially be known as BCT. Telus Communications Inc. has already purchased three sets of fiber optic lines to link its networks in the West to Eastern Canada and to GTE Corp. in Stamford, CT. The new firm will have BC Telecom chairman Brian Canfield as its chairman and Telus CEO George Petty as its president and CEO.

Rogers offers new cell service

Rogers Cantel Mobile Communications Inc. has introduced "pay-as-you-go," a prepaid cellular telephone service for customers with either a poor or no credit record. Customers can avail of the new service for $150 and includes an analog cellphone and a calling card worth C$25 that is good for 60 minutes worth of airtime anywhere in Canada. Customers can also buy a new card from a Cantel dealer or retail distributor when credit time runs out.
