eBay shares tumble on news of new on-line competitor

Online auction firm eBay Inc of San Jose, CA, is expected to face stiffer competition following the formation of a new online auction network called FairMarketPlace. The new network, which is headed by Microsoft Corp, Dell Computer Corp, Excite@Home Corp, will link 100 Web sites to enable the auction sites of its partners to appear on the sites of other alliance members. E-bay has earlier signed a deal to co-brand a consumer-to- consumer auction site with America Online Inc.

Houston, Texas-based Tenagra Corp. and its partner, Peter de Jager, have received a $10 million bid for a Web site called year2000.com. The Web site is being auctioned on San Jose, Calif.-based eBay Inc.
