CP open to merger with U.S. rail rival

Calgary, Alb.-based Canadian Pacific Ltd. has announced that it is seeking a merger partner in the United States. Canadian Pacific, which is led by chairman and chief executive officer David O'Brien, has reported cash flow of $751 million for the periof of January through March in 2000.

Bank merger rules back on track: Banks see news as pleasant surprise

Canadian Finance Minister Ralph Goodale announced in July 2004 that the Liberals would push ahead with bank merger guidelines despite their minority government status. Mr. Goodale's determination to move forward on the merger rules was welcomed by the financial services sector and could mean that he would remain Finance Minister after a cabinet reshuffle expected later in the month.

Rival launches hostile bid for Barrington

Sunoma Energy Corp., a Calgary, Alberta-based energy company, launched a hostile bid of C$222.3 million, or C$3.75 a share, in cash for mid-sized rival Barrington Petroleum Ltd. Sunoma, whose biggest shareholder is private investment fund Natural Gas Partners of Fort Worth, TX, would also assume C$163 million in Barrington debt. Sunoma concentrates on exploring and producing natural gas, primarily in the northwestern and central areas of Alberta. Barrington explores for and produces natural gas and natural gas liquids on Alberta and Saskatchewan.
