Barrick says it pursued Bre-X till the end

Toronto, Ont.-based Barrick Gold Corp. had believed that Calgary, Alb.-based Bre-X Minerals Ltd.'s Busang gold fields in Indonesia were a rich discovery. Barrick Gold, which apparently was deceived in the massive fraud case, pulled out of the project after Bre-X partner Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold Inc. discovered the mine was salted with gold samples.

Barrick bets on Pierina mine for major gold production boost

Barrick Gold Corp.'s gold mine in Pierina, Peru, is slated to start production by the end of 1998 at annual rate of 750,000 ounces at an average cash cost of US$50 an ounce, according to its spokesman Vincent Borg. Barrick expects to lower its average production cost from $170 an ounce as forecasted for 1998 to $150 an ounce in 1999. The Pierina production will raise the firm's 1999 production target by 13% to 3.5 million ounces. Since 1995, Barrick's annual gold production has been unchanged at just over three million ounces.
