Goldcorp strikers fear Red Lake mine may not operate until 2000
Article Abstract:
Goldcorp Inc. of Toronto, Canada, may not resume operations at its Red Lake gold mine in northwestern Ontario for another year-and-a-half. About the time 187 Red Lake miners went on strike in June 1996, an extensive underground exploration program was launched that led to the discovery of rich zones roughly 1.6 kilometers deep. Goldcorp chairman and CEO Robert McEwen said they are planning a $50 million development program that would allow the new ore to be mined and lead to an annual production of 200,000 ounces of gold. Construction, which is planned to begin in 1999, is going to last a year.
