Battle over cable business news getting hotter

Cable News Network (CNN) and Consumer News and Business Channel Partnership (CNBC) are intensifying their efforts to improve business news offerings in response to people's growing interest in money markets and the surge of the stock market. CNN is launching 'Ahead of the Curve,' a daily business show, and in Nov 1999, it will feed live broadcasts from the New York Stock Exchange. CNBC stated that it welcomes the competition, believing that the new shows of its rival will highlight the value of business news.

CBS connects with new Internet portal

CBS TV network has signed a deal to buy more than 50% interest in Internet portal iWon.com, which attracts users using million-dollar sweepstakes. Users can win by surfing the site for news, weather, stocks, entertainment, e-mail and other items. CBS, which is alloting $70 million to launch promotional campaigns, will use the site as the main portal to its other web sites. The site's rivals include Walt Disney's Go Network and NBC Internet.
