Beating Japan at its own game: Motorola is leading in wireless devices
Article Abstract:
Motorola Inc has the largest market share of wireless communications technology with one-third of the cellular radio/mobile phone equipment industry. Motorola is actively pursuing product development in the areas of two-way radios, pager systems and portable telephones, in an attempt to remain ahead of foreign competition, especially from Japan. Industry analysts consider Motorola's wireless technology to be the best and Motorola licenses it to users and distributors around the world. Motorola faces new competition from NEC Corp and L.M. Ericsson Inc and also has difficulties because a number of its wireless products are for relatively small markets. The company continues to invest heavily in research and development and efforts to cut production costs, which may forestall the problems other high technology US companies have in competing with Japanese product development.

Nynex plans pedestrian's mobile phone
Article Abstract:
Nynex Corp will establish a network of portable, hand-held cellular phones for use by pedestrians walking the streets of New York. The new network will use an alternative set of frequencies; Nynex's existing cellular customers will not be able to communicate with users of the new network. The second network will use radio frequencies that Nynex already owns, so it will not have to wait for government approval as will other companies with the same plans. Nynex will purchase its portable handsets from Qualcomm Inc of San Diego, and the handsets will sell for around $500. Thanks to a digital system designed by Qualcomm, the network will be able to handle 20 times more calls than existing cellular networks.
