BellSouth still has merger options despite its failed bid to consolidate with Sprint. Analyst Jeffrey Kagan said that the merger frenzy in the phone industry is far from over as major telecoms race to become bigger and increase revenue by becoming a one-stop providers of local phone, long-distance, wireless, high-speed Internet and cable service in the US. BellSouth must seek a long-distance company for a partner in order for it to become a one-stop communications provider and national player.

Airwave auction generates static
Article Abstract:
Verizon was the big winnerr in an auction of airwaves conducted by the Federal Communications Commission. It bid $8.8 billion for 113 licenses including $4 billion for two licenses in New York. It also won prime spectrum in Los Angeles, CA, Boston, MA, Seattle, WA, and other markets. Carriers are expected to use the airwaves to reduce busy signals in congested areas, cut down on dropped calls and roll our wireless Web services.

Former AT&T executive takes top spot at Global Crossing
Article Abstract:
Long distance telecommunications firm Global Crossing CEO Bob Annunziata is stepping down to be replaced by Leo Hindery, former CEO of Global Crossing's GlobalCenter. Annunziata said he wants to concentrate on growing small companies into large companies and that he will remain a director of Global Crossing. Hindery was a former CEO of AT&T's broadband and Internet services.
