Best as long-term bets, stock funds the short-term losers last year
Article Abstract:
The average Canadian stock fund declined by 3% in 1998, the worst performance since the 11.3% loss in 1990. Domestic bond funds posted an average gain of 6.7% in 1998. However, domestic stock funds are still ahead of bond funds over five years, with an annual compound return of 8.4% compared with the bond funds' 7.2%. Over a 10-yr period, bonds funds outperformed the equities with 9.7% return over the stock funds' 8.9%.
