Kerry Packer, the boss of Channel Nine knew what he wanted to do for the betterment of his channel. He was a constant viewer who called the network to give his opinion on the shows which was genuinely appreciated by the staff and far from stiffing creativity, his constant needling raised the adrenaline levels in every department spurring the staff to try harder knowing that he cared enough to watch.
