Bird Satellite ruffles Telesat feathers
Article Abstract:
Bird Satellite (Ottawa, Canada) plans to launch two satellites through a Can$1 bil investment to offer rural Canadian households high-speed Internet access. Telesat Canada, a BCE Inc (Montreal, Canada) subsidiary, also aims for the two orbital slots being offered by Industry Canada, and estimates satellite launch costs at Can$500 mil to Can$1 bil. The federal government aims to grant high-speed Internet access to all Canadians by 2004, and Industry Canada should award the licenses by June 2001. Satellite launches are planned by Bird Satellite and Telesat in 2003 and 2005.
