Sudden Shift On Detainee
Article Abstract:
Yaser Esam Hamdi, held in detention for his participation in the 2001 Afghan war against the US, will be given access to his attorney, public defender Frank W. Dunham Jr. The Pentagon agreed to the arrangment because it said intelligence officers had completed their interro gation of Hamdi. It was thought that the Bush administration chose to allow attorney access to avoid problems with the US Supreme Court tomorrow as the Dept. of Justice prepares to argue that Pres. Bush has authority to detain an American citizen in time of war without legal representation. Hamdi is a Louisianan with a Saudi Arabian background.
