Borland halts use of Lotus menus; it plans an appeal of infringement ruling
Article Abstract:
Borland International Inc is offering a version of its Quattro Pro spreadsheet software without the commands that have been ruled by a district court judge to be copyright violations of Lotus Development Corp's 1-2-3 spreadsheet software. Borland plans to appeal the ruling and will continue to sell software with the Lotus commands as long as that is a legal option. The US district judge ruled that the Borland software duplicated the command menus of Lotus' software. Borland claims that fewer than ten percent of its users rely on the command menu and Borland had planned for the worst case scenario in order to prepare for any court order. The case must go before a jury to decide on the award of damages.

3Com, pounded last month, rebounds on fat earnings
Article Abstract:
3Com Corp recovers from the plunge its share value suffered on May 28, 1993 as it reports fourth quarter earnings of $13.3 million, or 40 cents a share. The figure is more than twice the year-ago period's $5.9 million, or 19 cents a share. The company's stock value increased $4.75 to close at $27 on Jun 25 following the positive announcement. 3Com's stock tumbled when market analysts lowered its near-term rating of the company from above average to neutral. The rating was a reaction to 3Com's move to increase production of its network adapters making it readily available rather than having the 8-week backlog when the year started. In response, a number of distributors cut back on their orders.

Founder of 3Com plans to become consultant
Article Abstract:
3Com Corp's Robert M. Metcalfe, 44, is stepping down from his management and board positions to become a consultant for the company he founded in 1979. The appointment of Eric P. Benhamou to president by the board in Apr 1990 contributed to Metcalfe's decision. Metcalfe invented the Ethernet system of connecting computers on a local area network (LAN) in 1973 and founded 3Com Corp to commercialize the technology. Metcalfe expressed that he is not currently interested in heading up a new company or in working for another company in the networking industry.
