Britain Grants License to Make Human Embryos for Stem Cells
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom has granted a one-year licenxe to Newcastle Center for Life in England to engage in therapeutic cloning, a controversial procedure which entails generating and then destroying an embryo in order to harvest stem cells. In the process licensed, cell nuclei taken from a patient's skin are inserted into human eggs from which the nuclei have been extracted, after which stem cells develop as the embryo grows. Those stem cells subsequently are harvested and used for research.
