Reports That Led to Terror Alert Were Years Old, Officials Say

U.S. officials acknowledged that much of the information on which the latest terrorism alert was based was three to four years old. Authorities said much of the documentary information from Pakistan consisted of reconnaissance conducted before the Sept. 11 attacks. The dated, but detailed documentation of surveillance, when combined with recent chatter suggesting an impending Al Qaeda attack in the United States, caused authorities to issue the terrorism alert.
