Brokerages post record profits
Article Abstract:
During 2000, securities firms in Canada had operating profits of $2.6 bil, up 83%. Final profit was $1.2 bil. The slowing economy will likely depress record figures in 2001. Retail trading is being hindered by the economy and depressed stock markets. In Q1 2001, principal equity trading has been devastated, after doubling revenue in 2000, and discount broker trading volume is down sharply. Equity underwriting is expected to stay weak for much of 2001.
