Builder gives 'smart house' a brain for less than $1,000

Housing building firm Kaufman and Broad will introduce a house with a wiring option that will enable homeowners to control heating, cooling, lighting and appliances through the Internet. The system is capable of monitoring energy use by major appliances and homeowners are informed of any problem which can arise by e-mail. The product, called Aladn, supplements the home-wiring options that have taken advantage of the advances in telecommunications technologies. The system is priced at less than $1,000.

Debt-free dwelling place
Article Abstract:
An estimated 700,000 people or 13% of total US home sales in the 12 months ended Sept 30, 1999, have avoided mortgage payments by paying cash up front. House buyers who pay in cash save large amount in interest payments as well as mortgage-related closing costs. The top two states in terms of percentage of cash homes sales were Florida, at 21% and Nevada, at 18%. The national average was 13.3%. However, analysts believe that future cash sales may decline as a result of a law that removes the prospect of a huge capital gains tax, and the preference of younger Americans towards stocks.
