CBC enters portal wars on World Wide Web
Article Abstract:
Canadian Broadcasting Corp. (CBC) is expanding its presence in the World Wide Web as means to become the leading source for news and information in Canada. The company plans to double its budget on new media to take on rivals, including Sun Media Corp.'s Canoe, as the leading source for news. In line with its goals, CBC launched a New Media unit and named John Lewis as the unit's executive director. The Web site will use content from CBC's television and radio arms, and print journalists to write for the site. Of C$1.1 billion CBC operating budget, 1% goes to new media ventures, which includes the Web site.
