David O'Brien, who became CEO in 1996, has rebuilt Canadian Pacific Ltd. while maintaining it as a conglomerate. He is now in a position to sell off some of the company's core divisions and transform CP into a streamlined corporation, possibly dealing only with oil, gas and mining business.
