Cabinet upholds CRTC decision on satellite TV services
Article Abstract:
The Canadian federal cabinet has upheld a CRTC ruling that allows satellite TV services to purchase film rights directly from Hollywood in the US. In March 1998, the CRTC overturned one of its former rulings, which required satellite TV services to purchase the rights to pay-per-view feature movies only via Canadian distributors. The commission thus allow Viewers Choice Canada Inc., Canal Indigo and Allarcom Ltd. to purchase movie rights straight from American distributors by amending the companies' permits. Eighty-five percent of the film distribution market in Canada is controlled by American distributors.
