AT&T bumps up cable rates

AT and T Broadband will raise monthly fees by 5% to 21% for basic expanded service in summer 2000. This service level includes popular and ad- supported channels such as CNN, MTV and ESPN and has about 19 million subscribers. AT and T officials justify the cable price hike as the only means for the cable company to cope with the rising cost of programming and system upgrades.

Cable prices continue climb as satellite use grows
Article Abstract:
The Federal Communications Commission reported that satellite TV now has a small but statistically significant influence over demand for cable TV service. However, satellite TV's market share is still not big enough to prevent cable TV rates from rising near the general inflation rate for the 12 months ending Jul 1, 2000. The average monthly cable bill at the end of that period stood at $34.11, up by 5.8%, against a 3.7% increase in the Consumer Price Index.

AT&T pressured to reach cable deal
Article Abstract:
Talks between AT&T and AOL Time Warner over the sale of former's 26% stake in Time Warner Entertainment to the latter have bogged down over how much the stake is worth. AT&T wants $14 billion while AOL has valued the 26% share at only $7 billion. The telephone company is selling the stake to meet a May 19 deadline set by the FCC as a condition for approving its acquisition of cable company MediaOne in 2000. Additional differences between the two companies include terms for AT&T cable to offer AOL's Internet service and a long-term deal for AT&T to carry Time Warner channels.
