Aluminum vs. steel: which is better?
Article Abstract:
The increasing amount of aluminum in motor vehicles has led to an ongoing debate on which metal is the best. The average US vehicle in 1999 contains 236 pounds of aluminum, an increase from only 112 pounds in 1978. The same time frame saw the amount of steel in US vehicles decrease from 1,915 pounds to 1,399 pounds. While aluminum has been used by the industry to meet weight and fuel economy targets, the cost of aluminum, $1 a pound to steel's $0.20 to $0.30 per pound, continue to remain prohibitive.

Expiring leases lift used car supply
Article Abstract:
The higher residual value placed by banks and car manufacturers on motor vehicles during 1996 and 1997 is providing a windfall for buyers of used cars. The residual value, which is the predicted amount of a vehicle after the expiration of the lease, was placed higher in order to reduce monthly payment and attract more new car buyers. That strategy, which led to record car sales during those years, has backfired in 2000 when those vehicles are valued at much less than the predicted residual value.

Execs scolded for tire recall
Article Abstract:
Ford Motor Co and Bridgestone/Firestone Inc executives have been accused of failing to act on the problem of tire separation despite mounting evidence of the existence of a deadly fault on the products. The tires have been blamed for as many as 88 deaths on US highways, most of them on Ford Explorers. In a hearing before the US Congress on Sep 6, 2000, executives from the two companies said that they were unaware of the problem until early 2000.
