Caffeine jolts juice, candy sales

Caffeine, coffee's key ingredient, is currently marketed as a stimulant in soft drinks, candy, chewing gums, tea, bottled water and orange juice and is particularly to teens and college students. Stay Alert, the chewing gum introduced by Amurol division of Wrigley, contains caffeine that is equivalent to a cup of coffee while Coca Cola spent almost $50 million to launch its soft drink Surge, which contains 50%V more caffeine than other sodas. Other caffeinated products being marketed in the US include Edge2OJ from Beverage Alternatives and Fast Lane Tea from Celestial Seasonings.

Bottled water tops shoppers' Y2K lists

Bottled water is the most in demand item in grocery stores as consumers prepare for the year 2000. Kroger stores in the Cincinnati, OH, area, saw sales of bottled water triple, while some Albertson's stores doubled sales of bottled water. Retailers also experinced higher demand for such items as prescription drugs, flashlights, batteries and canned foods. However, widespread hoarding has yet to materialize at most of the retail stores in the US.
