Campus speech codes
Article Abstract:
Many universities adopted policies, rules and regulation during the 1980s to combat increasing incidents of demonstrated hatred and prejudice by college students towards their classmates. Although these attacks were limited primarily to verbal 'slurs,' college administrators feared the evolution of a greater problem. In the 1990s, these policies are facing challenges in courts by those who believe that they undermine the provisions of the First Amendment that protect freedom of speech.

Rethinking affirmative action
Article Abstract:
National debate over affirmative action policies involves emotionally charged issues and often divisive questions. Most Americans polled support 'affirmative action' but oppose 'preferences' and quotas,' which critics charge is what the policy amounts to. Hotly debated questions include whether affirmative action plans should be curtailed or ended, whether it has a place in higher education, and whether business preferences for government contracts are appropriate.

The British monarchy: Will the royal family be replaced by a republic?
Article Abstract:
A growing number of Britons are seeking to abolish Britain's monarchy. The public disapproves of the royal family's marital behavior and many citizens object to the politics and cost of the monarchy. Some assert that the monarchy provides protection for the government and that it encourages a class system in Britain. Although the majority of Britons support the monarchy, they do not expect that it will endure.
