CanWest urges changes in media rules

Winnipeg, Man.-based CanWest Global Communications Corp., which is led by chairman Izzy Asper, said that Canadian media companies cannot compete against giant global media companies, such as Time Warner Inc. CanWest, which is urging the government to change the regulatory regime, reported $146 million in profits in 1999.

CanWest Global Communications Corp. posted an increase in its profits and revenues for the three-month period ending February 28, 2001. The company posted C$10.5 million in quarterly profits, compared to C$24.5 million in profits during the same period in 2000.
