Canada's poor productivity linked to weak currency: economists
Article Abstract:
Canada's weak productivity performance in the 1990s can be blamed on the country's weak currency, according to economists Thomas Courchene and Herb Grubel. The economists said that a lower dollar allowed Canadian corporations to avoid restructuring. The declining dollar also encouraged Canadian companies to pursue exports without striving for productivity improvements. The Canadian economy has also failed to shift capital and workers to more productive, high-technology sectors from the resource industry.
