Canadian Airlines doesn't expect a profit this year

Canadian Airlines International Ltd is not anticipating profits for 1999 as it remains uncertain about obtaining financial support for the rest of the year. However, company CEO Kevin Benson said that there are positive trends in the airline industry that should benefit Canadian Airlines. The carrier needs C$300 million to C$500 million in equity investment to help it continue operating and improve revenue.

TransAlta profit jumps 16 per cent

Electric utility firm TransAlta Corp of Calgary, Alberta, has posted a 16% growth in profit to C$211.4 million or $1.31 a share on revenue of C$441.8 million in 1998. The company had a profit of C$182.6 million or C$1.14 a share on C$433.4 million in 1997. The company attributed the higher earnings to a $73.6 million after-tax gain from the sale of its transmission lines in New Zealand.
