Canadian Airlines strikes deal with Daimler unit

Canadian Airlines International Inc. has formed a joint venture with MTU Munich, an aerospace affiliate of Germany-based Daimler-Benz AG, to establish an engine maintenance operation in Vancouver, British Columbia. The joint venture, called MTU Maintenance Canada Ltd., will lease and take over the existing engine overhaul facilities of Canadian Airlines located at the Vancouver airport. Under the terms of the deal, MTU will shell out C$17.5 million for its 70% stake in the new company, while Canadian Airlines will invest an estimated C$7.5 million worth of tools and equipment for its 30% stake in the venture. Canadian Airlines expects to save between C$500,000 and C$1 million annually through the joint venture, while keeping some 250 union workers at its maintenance facility.

A&B Sound Ltd. filed for bankruptcy protection on 19 January 2005, as it could not face the competition posed by new competitors in the electronics and the music-retailing sector. Sun Capital Partners Group Incorporations would take over the company and invest in the company and also plans to retain the company's eight hundred and all its outlets in Western Canada.
