Canadian animators leading 3-D revolution; better technology is lowering the high cost of production

Nelvana Ltd.'s Patrick Loubert said developments in 3-D technology have thinned the line between live action and animation. Loubert, who is Nelvana co-founder and co-chief executive officer, observed the swift growth in the technology in a short period of time. The Toronto, Canada-based Nelvana is in fact launching the first television show with the 3-D format this fall. Rolie Polie Olie, the children's show, which will be shown on the Disney channel, will enthrall audiences with its exciting visual presentation. Observers said Canadian animators are making headways in the establishment of computer-generated TV shows.

Atlantis gearing up for growth in TV

Atlantis Communications Inc. introduced a new management team at its annual shareholders meeting on Jun. 18, 1998 as part of its growth strategy to expand. According to company Chairman Michael MacMillan, the firm has significantly enhanced its management team to meet its goal of expanding its three core business: television production, distribution and specialty broadcasting. Included in Atlantis Communications' new hirees to bolster management are several senior executives with exemplary corporate backgrounds such as Lewis Rose and Kerri Golden.

CRTC approves merger of broadcast units

Alliance Atlantis Communications Inc has received approval from the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission to combine its broadcast holdings. The deal will consolidate Alliance's Showcase Television Inc and History Television Inc, and Atlantis's Home and Garden Television Canada Inc and Life Network Inc. The Toronto, Canada-based entertainment company's broadcast assets will be completely consolidated by Mar 2000.
