Cargill, Continental Grain sow seeds of merger; deal would create No. 1 grain exporter
Article Abstract:
Cargill intends to acquire the commodities operations of Continental Grain in a move that is touted to establish the biggest grain exporter in the US. The combination comes at a time of declining commodity prices and weak Asian demand, which have hurt US producers and traders. Minneapolis, MN-based Cargill reported that profit for the latest quarter has dropped by 96% to $4 million because of the planned merger. The planned merger would link up two private firms engaged in a variety of businesses and major farm products. Significant savings in costs are expected as a result of the merger.

GE takes last shot to save Honeywell deal
Article Abstract:
General Electric Co (GE) is making a final offer to sell 20% of Gecas to gain European Union's (EU) approval for its $41-billion acquisition of Honeywell Inc. GE is willing to sell a fifth of its aircraft leasing company as long as it is offset by reduced disposals of other Honeywell's aerospace operations. On Jun 27, 2001, GE lawyers met EU officials to find a way to restructure the company's 'final offer,' which analysts predict could not appease EU regulators.
