Chapters expect losses at on-line division awaiting IPO

Bookstore chain Chapters Inc of Toronto, Ontario, has announced that it will spin off its online division as a separate public company called Chapters Online. The company is projecting to raise more than C$20 million from the IPO, which is expected to be completed by Oct 1999. Chapters Online reported a revenue of C$3.7 million for the qtr ended Jul 3, 1999, from C$1.5 million in the 4th qtr FY98 and $500,000 in the 3rd qtr FY98.

On-line unit drags Chapters down

Chapters Inc. saw strong sales increases for the second-quarter in its online operations. However, the company continues to suffer losses in the online business, along with the wholesale division. Chapters posted a C$7.8 million loss for the 13 weeks ending September 30, 2000.
