Competitors not fazed by Air Canada turbulence (plans to raise fare and reduce work force)

Montreal-based air carrier Air Canada has announced a six percent hike in fares, reduce its work force by eight percent and may reduce service on its local air service routes in anticipation of its low fourth quarter earnings. Air Canada is taking this steps due to a slowing United States economy, high fuel cost and competition with other airlines.

Air Canada has been charged with predatory air fare reductions by the Canadian Commissioner of Competition Konrad von Finckenstein. Air Canada fares matched CanJet Airline fares to specific cities of $89 Canadian to $99 Canadian rather than the usual fare of $600 Canadian.
