Conrad Black takes on Toronto
Article Abstract:
Media tycoon Conrad Black is set to launch his newspaper in Toronto, Canada. Black's newspaper, under the secret working title "The Times," has been attracting extensive media coverage in Canada for nearly 12 months. Industry experts in Toronto anticipate that Black will encounter tough competition among existing newspapers in the country. Toronto Star publisher John Honderich stated that he views Black's launching as directly aimed to dominate the media industry in the country. Doug Knight, publisher of the tabloid Toronto Star, is least worried about Black's entry as his demographics are outside Black's target group.

Southham paper's newsroom on strike
Article Abstract:
Southam Inc.'s Newsroom staff in St. Catherines Standard, Ontario, went on a strike. The strike came during the time when Southam is preparing to launch a national newspaper. Union officials stated that strikes at other Southam newspaper offices also loom and accused company officials of forcing workers to subsidize the still un-named national newspaper which is scheduled to launch on Oct. 5, 1998. Southam executives denied the allegations and called the move a unionist babble from people that do not understand the business.
