Consumer debt: Impact of bankruptcy law
Article Abstract:
Bankruptcy filings have fallen dramatically and have reached their lowest levels in 2006, even as student debt, mortgage and credit card debt have increased. The reasons for the drop could be the higher cost of filing for bankruptcy or the new statute that has emboldened debt collectors, but lawyers, judges and researchers believe bankruptcy filing will increase by at least 20 percent in 2007 due to factors such as illness, divorce and job loss resulting in mortgage defaults and foreclosures.
