The Australian High Court is in a dispute with the federal government over the Court's role in the evolution of common law. The rulings of the Court on such matters as refugees and human rights have been criticised by lawmakers for avoiding the proper political channels for changing laws. Chief Justice Murray Gleeson says people in power do not like the system of checks and balances.
