Some of Sherritt Inc's divisions, including its nickel-mining operations, have been blacklisted by the US Treasury Dept for doing business in Cuba. This should not hurt this fast growing company too much, as it has thrived since CEO Ian Delaney took control with a hostile takeover in 1990.

Bre-X Minerals Ltd has reportedly discovered a huge gold deposit on the Indonesian section of Borneo. This has caused the firm's stock to jump from $1.90 to as high as $170 per share. Other Canadian junior mining companies are also doing well in foreign explorations.

Going capitalist on the Canbuck

Cuba's economy is moving away rigid socialism into a quasi-capitalist state. There are now 400 foreign firms doing business in Cuba including a new joint venture launched by the Canadian firm Sherritt Inc to develop nickel and cobalt deposits near Moa Bay.
