Current situation
Article Abstract:
The ending of the Cold War has altered the balance of power in East Asia and has changed the nature of US-East Asian relations. The removal of the Soviet threat has reduced the need for security alliances, allowing East Asian countries to focus primarily on economic issues. Questions have been raised on the need for continued US military presence in the region. However, the threat of Japan or a unified Korea attempting to fill in the resulting power vacuum merits serious concern. The US also has to address its trade deficit with countries in the region, particularly Japan, China and Taiwan.

Background
Article Abstract:
The nature of US-East Asian relations in the 20th century has been determined by three events: World War II, the Cold War and the ending of the Cold War. World War II resulted in the establishment of a strong US military presence in the region. The Cold War further consolidated the American presence through economic and security alliances with East Asian countries opposed to communism. Similarly, the end of the Cold War has altered the nature of relations between the US and East Asia. Vietnam, China, Korea and Japan have played key roles in the new relationship between the US and Asia.

Outlook
Article Abstract:
Any break in Japan-US relations will most likely be a result of trade disputes, particularly Japan's refusal to open its markets to foreign competition. Similarly, US interests in Eastern Asia may be seriously threatened by the formation of a regional trading bloc led by Japan. Japan's economic and military intentions are also causing apprehension among its neighbors, especially with the reduced US military presence in the region.
