Cuts may trigger more travel agent fees
Article Abstract:
Travel agents have warned that the continuous reduction by the major airlines on travel agency commissions could result in more service fees. The caution, along with disgust and allegations of airline price-fixing, was aired following announcements by United, Delta and American that they will limit commissions at $100 for sales of round-trip international tickets. The airliners' move to lower commissions cap in an effort to obtain increased bookings was also deemed futile, since, according to the American Society of Travel Agents, agents charging for fees grew from 25% before 1995 to 64%. However, the airline industry is also fighting back by banking on electronic ticketing and Internet bookings for its projected savings.

Strike fears fill flights of Northwest's rivals
Article Abstract:
Northwest Airlines' rival airlines are almost booked because of fears that Northwest pilots will stage a strike if no labor contract has been signed. The flights of United and Delta are all sold out, a guarantee that a strike could affect thousands of vacations and business travels in and out of Detroit, MI, Minneapolis, MN, and Memphis, TN. Pilots have threatened to walk off their jobs if no agreement has been reached on the deadline on Aug. 29, 1998. Northwest affiliates, Mesaba and Northwest Express Airlines, said that they will suspend all flight schedules if Northwest pilots went on strike.
